The holidays are a wonderful time for families to relax and recharge, but heading back to school can be a challenge for children (and parents!). To help your family ease back into the school routine, here are five simple tips.
1. Start Re-establishing Routines Early
Holiday schedules can be a bit more relaxed, but a week or two before school starts, it’s a good idea to return to regular bedtime, wake-up, and mealtime routines. A consistent schedule helps children adjust and ensures they’re well-rested and ready to learn.
2. Talk About the New School Year
Take some time to chat with your child about what they’re looking forward to and any concerns they might have about the new grade. Highlight exciting aspects, such as seeing friends, new subjects, or extracurricular activities. A positive attitude from you can help set the tone for their return.
3. Organise School Supplies Together
Involve your child in preparing their school gear. Check uniforms, lunchboxes, and stationery, and let them pick out a few new items. Feeling prepared and having a say in their supplies can help build excitement and confidence.
4. Gradually Reduce Screen Time
Holidays often mean extra screen time, but reducing this in the lead-up to school can make the transition easier. Encourage outdoor play, reading, or creative activities to shift their focus and energy back towards structured learning.
5. Review and Refresh Key Skills
A quick refresher of some school basics can be helpful. You could spend time practising reading, writing, or maths in a fun, relaxed way. This doesn’t need to feel like homework—games, puzzles, or even baking (great for practising measurements!) can do the trick.
By planning ahead and making small adjustments before school starts, your child will feel more prepared and confident heading into their new school year. Here's to a successful start to the term!
Remember to be kind and share joy!
